20171008 Ice Cream Sundae #105: Perfume & Pixel Art [Ice Cream Sundae]

Perfume & Pixel Art [Ice Cream Sundae]

Hi ,I have an exciting weekend ahead, flying to Salt Lake City for the first time! I'm visiting a friend and am also very excited to buy skis, boots and probably a few more stuff to be ready for the ski season! As I'm sure you know from the news, it's been another pretty atrocious series of upsetting news, from the shooting in Las Vegas, the referendum and police brutality in Barcelona, knifing in Marseille, hurricane aftermath in Puerto Rico, and much more around the world. The Sundae newsletter isn't about any of this, though I mention it to say my thoughts are with those who have either lost loved ones, or know people who have lost much in recent disasters. And now, as the Monty Python would say, for something completely different.Enjoy the rest of your weekend and remember to forward to this a friend if you enjoy what you're reading! Best,Willem

Miss Dior - The New Eau de Parfum (Youtube, 45 sec advert)I came across the new Miss Dior advert featuring Natalie Portman a little over a week ago in this Adweek article that also tracks back some of the latest interestingly surreal and stylish perfume ads of the past few years and it's been sticking in my mind so much I ended up watching it several times. The 37 million views and counting on Youtube tell me I'm not the only one it's popular with, so much so you may have already seen it.Doesn't it read as an impactful yet sort of disjointed movie trailer? The editing seems pretty clearly and I'd say powerfully matching the music. It's definitely cheesy and I have a soft spot for romantic cheese - and Paris, of course. The link I'm making with the next article is that I'm sure someone who knows more than me about cinema and editing could pull apart what seems to be very pretty and artistic in this film as a series of - I suspect - cheap tricks yet greatly achieve the wide audience popularity and general feel good job. A Pixel Artist Renounces Pixel Art (Dino Farm Games blog, 15 min read)This is from a couple of years ago though new to me. Don't be concerned about the video game topic, video game knowledge is not required to appreciate the article and the idea at its heart of the fact it takes surprisingly a lot to explain something that visually takes an instant to check out and that most people have made a judgement call on. In this case it's pixel art, and it makes me wonder about the video ad above and back to my just about forgotten aesthetics and at classes back when I studied cinema. It's a shame this particular video game studio gave up on pixel art and yet fascinating to read the thought and artistic process behind accepting what art works at the time of their writing the piece. Really interesting artistic perspective and it also gives me new questions to bear in mind next time I'll be visiting a museum, thinking of what artists may have had in mind.
