Best of the past week

Hi ,I had a fantastic week and hope you did too! I'm really enjoying my new gig, currently working with Energy BBDO, an advertising agency in Chicago. I spent a day prototyping ideas with Facebook Creative Shop this week and using a bunch of smartphone applications I hadn't tried before, it was great fun.As we're approaching the 100th edition of the Ice Cream Sundae newsletter I started looking into the email statistics, and quite a few of you subscribed aren't opening email particularly often (like at all) so I'm working on a couple of email surveys that I'm going to send out soon and will ask those of you who do read to complete the survey to find out what you're thinking of the Sundae and ponder how I can improve it, whether I want to change anything, etc.Other than that I'm still very much enjoying summer in Chicago. That said a few things this week reminded me of other important aspects of many American cities in general, and Chicago in particular. By that I mean its reputation for being one of the most, if not the most, segregated city in the United States. I really liked reading this piece from last year in Eater. While I'm a white guy, I happen to also love my hot sauce, so the title caught my attention. It's a feature linking hot sauce, food habits, Southern Black identity, Jim Crow and Beyoncé. Well worth a read.Hot Sauce in Her BagAnother one to supplement this point about Chicago being the most segregated city, I recommend checking out this piece from the FiveThirtyEight website analysing data and what is meant by diverse or segregated cities:The Most Diverse Cities are Often the Most Segregated

Procter & Gamble just released this new advertising campaign supporting  "My Black is Beautiful", a group started in 2006 "to spark a broader dialogue about black beauty". With this powerful video P&G are relaunching this initiative and wanting to start a conversation celebrating cultural identities and talking about racial bias. The Talk (2 minutes)And an additional one that isn't advertising:How do I Explain America to my Black Son? (2 minutes)

What's sticky in the communications industry?

I wasn't sure to place The Talk video here or in the previous section, instead I quite liked this cute advert featuring wizarding kids for Fruit of the Loom:

What's going on in gaming?

The One Shot podcast network in Chicago blends two passions for its creator James D'Amato: improvisational comedy and tabletop roleplaying games. I've exchanged a few tweets with James this week and hopefully working when he might be a guest on the Ice Cream for Everyone Podcast. He just achieved his funding goal for his latest Kickstarter project blending another of his favourite things apparently: Pro Wrestling. The Dungeon Dome project is a show mixing in the best of tabletop roleplaying games (here Dungeons & Dragons style fantasy), improv, and Pro Wrestling. Teams of two fantasy fighters combat one another in a fantasy tournament. Worth a look if this peakes your geekometer.

What else is interesting this week?

We started with food, veered into racism, bias and segregation, we'll finish with food.I got this from a friend on Facebook this week. I hadn't seen it before and absolutely love it.It's funny. Particularly if you have a pet peeve with some hip restaurant trends. Be sure to read the comments below the photos. We Want PlatesThat's about it, enjoy the rest of your weekend! Please forward the email to a friend if you enjoyed reading it. Look out for an online survey next week please! And if you have comments beforehand, please keep in touch as well, no need to wait for the survey!Cheers,Willem
