Best of the past week
Hey ,Enough going on between articles that caught my attention this week to call it a bit of a science-fiction theme. In particular, French film director Luc Besson's new movie Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is coming out in a few weeks. As this article lays out well, Valerian is a beloved French comic series (bandes dessinées) that debuted in 1967. I didn't particularly like Besson's last movie Lucy with Scarlett Johansson though I love Valerian and Franco-Belgian bandes dessinées so I'm hoping this one will be better but I'm not too sure, we'll see.The article below makes a case of the series co-star and heroine Laureline for being an under appreciated science-fiction feminist icon. Which is a good thing given how easily female characters have been, can be, and often are misrepresented and/or stereotyped in science-fiction. And that's without mentioning the issues around female authors' lack of representation in science-fiction awards.

What's sticky in the communications industry?
I'm not particularly following the specific header here, aside from the need to sometimes have current or small talk topics to chat about in professional or networking environments, one of the favourites that I have little to no knowledge about are sports in general. Which is why I particularly appreciated the XKCD comic strip, even if I really have even less knowledge than that guy.Sports Knowledge (XKCD)

What's going on in gaming?
I just found out that the latest yearly edition of the Games Done Quick event in Minneapolis completed and they managed to break their past year record by raisng $1.7 Million for Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders). What is Games Done Quick, you ask? Well in short it's an annual fundraising event in which guests are known "speedrunners" of a wide variety of different video games, meaning they know the games and can complete them from beginning to end at breakneck speeds, people watch them play, the whole thing is broadcast live online, commentaries are made while people play (apparently entertaining if you're into that sort of thing), and money is raised for a good cause.Summer Games Done Quick 2017 Break Last Year's Record, Raises $1.7M for Charity

What else is interesting this week?
I published a new episode of the Ice Cream for Everyone Podcast! I had a fun and fascinating conversation with business strategy consultant Allan Cohen about his science-fiction inspiration, the creativity involved in designing workshops for businesses, artificial intelligence, complex adaptive systems, and more.I'd heard Allan speak at the Conference for Global Transformation I attended a couple of months ago, really enjoyed his sessions and invited him to be a guest on the podcast. I hope you enjoy it as well!Strategy Consulting & Complex Adaptive Systems with Allan CohenThat's about it for this week, enjoy the rest of your weekend and please forward the email to a friend if you enjoy it!Cheers,Willem
