Settling in Chicago [Ice Cream Sundae]

Best of the past week

Hey , Tough to believe it's April already, at least for me. The winter just flew by. I've started settling in Chicago, fun week taking care of some admin stuff like visiting the Department of Motor Vehicles a few times as well as actual fun activities like attending events organised by the Chicago chapter of the American Marketing Association and Creative Mornings. I also moved into a new place for this month and had a date, so altogether a good week.I mention the date as a segue to one of the main things that attracted my attention this week; Illustrator Audrey Jones' Tinder Diaries is a project where she brought chats from the dating app Tinder to life in a variety of curious and interesting drawings. Worth a look. I originally got that from this article on Fast Company.Audrey Jones' Tinder Diaries

What's sticky in the communications industry?

It's traditional for many brands to produce and publish a wide variety of humorous prank adverts and promotional videos for April Fools Day. Adweek's AdFreak rounded up all the best ones and some more.

It's a pretty mixed bag and there are a lot. I'll single out the amusing

 and

for the excellent 80s laser style and music in the video.

What's going on in gaming?

This week I'll point you to this thing I'd never heard about; there is a trend amongst what I imagine are originally fans of WWE wrestling, video game characters, and of creating or coding their own fan based video games. This story takes us into the curious niche world of people who create wrestling videos games populated by characters from other video games. On top of that, they apparently create videos with the kind of side scandals that also happen in WWE.Interesting read.Inside the Weird World of Video Game Wrestling Leagues

What else is interesting this week?

Lastly, I thought I'd share another side of Chicago than the kind some of you may have seen related to murders and violence in the South Side of the city.I came across this video that had made the news last month on MSNBC along with an interview of Ja'Mal Green, the young man who spoke up against the idea of increasing police force in Chicago and talks about focusing on education instead, and said Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel "doesn't care about black people".Meet the 21-year-old Chicago organizer whose Rahm Emanuel takedown was heard around the world. That's about it for this week, have an amazing Sunday wherever you are and as usual please share and forward the newsletter to a friend if you think they'll be interested in some of the links! Thanks,Willem
