Best of the past week

Hi , I hope you had a fantastic week! I've arrived in Chicago after a long and beautiful train ride, as mentioned last week. I'll be staying here until at least the end of the end of April and perhaps longer, we'll see. As you probably know if you've been following the newsletter, I'm looking into what's next professionally, probably why the following articles caught my attention: The War for Talent Is Over, and Everyone Lost. This piece starts with a piece of research from consulting firm McKinsey published in 1998, asserting companies success in the future would be highly depending on how well they can attract and retain talent. The article looks at how current trends are in the workplace, from the number of freelancers who prefer their independence to a steady paycheck; to the reasons why some employees might still be unhappy even in a high paid job.Interesting read, even though the authors seem to be aiming at promoting their own personality tests and book. And while research and data are certainly valuable in considering professional choices, it's also important to know what your strengths are. I've found Gallup Strengthsfinder and their Theme Thursday podcast to be particularly useful in this regard.

This interesting 6 minute long video explores the pretty crazy narcissistic, often drunk and politically incorrect characters of the sitcom It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and looks at what they can teach us about or relate to famous concepts from German philosophers Friedrich Nietzsche and Martin Heidegger.Worth a watch."The Gang Gets Philosophical"

What's sticky in the communications industry?

We go in a slightly different direction than our usual advertising fare, for this fascinating article about the way food is communicated, haggled, bought and sold on Indian markets; and the impact Western food trends are having on food waste with the appearance of supermarkets in the country.Excellent read, and just the top numbers on the amount of food wasted in each continent is daunting. How Western Food Trends Are Impacting Indian Food Markets

What's going on in gaming?

I'm a big fan of theme parks and roller coasters so I got pretty excited at the perspective of an upcoming video game offering an updated take on classics like Roller Coaster Tycoon. This review of upcoming Planet Coaster tells us this new video game understands particularly well the LEGO-like building pleasure of conceiving and designing a whole amusement park as well as offering countless new design elements to create new roller coaster tracks.Looks like fun. I haven't played a video game in a long while but might just watch out for this one!

What else is interesting this week?

I'd like to finish this Sundae with the amazingly beautiful and strange photography collection of Alexander Petrosyan. He knows St Petersburg better than anyone and you can be sure to be fascinated at the sights captured through his lens. The Russia You'll Never See on Postcards Through the Lens of Photographer Alexander PetrosyanAnd that's about it for this Sundae, please feel free to forward to a friend if you enjoyed any of the links!Enjoy the rest of your weekend.Cheers,Willem
