The Story 2017, Moving Day, Both Sad and Excited [Ice Cream Sundae]

Best of the past week

Hi , Exciting times, this is it! I'm at the airport about to fly to San Francisco and then I'll head over to Denver at the end of the month. It has been an emotional week, lots of changes for family and close friends. I'm both sad to leave London for this time around and very excited about what's coming up next.I didn't have time to update my podcast, I'm late editing and publishing that, I'll catch up soon enough.Meanwhile thankfully I had an inspiring day and lots to share from The Story conference I attended on Friday, I have the highlights to share.I just can't miss out on mentioning Ingrid's talk and the photos she shared of visiting the construction grounds of Trident Lakes, a luxury doomsday survivalist community in Texas. I couldn't really believe it at first but it's real, here you go for more info: A Resort for the Apocalypse. That's the country I was born in, and that I'm going back to now. Stranger than fiction these days. The other talk I really wish to highlight first is Kate Clanchy's, a teacher and writer who started teaching poetry to children of immigrants and refugees at her school, her talk was really inspiring and the poems deeply moving. The organisers of the conference came across her via this long read: The Very Quiet Foreign Girls Poetry Group. Her students won several prizes, there are examples in the article.

Victoria Mappelbeck is an award winning writer and film maker who also spoke at The Story, her short film 160 Characters, based on the personal story of her relationship with the father of her child, seen from the perspective of the SMS they exchanged and that she found in her old Nokia mobile phone. The film is entirely shot on her smartphone. Absolutely worth watching.

What's sticky in the communications industry?

An interesting talk at The Story about the results of an advertising agency's work hours experiment a year in, and so far it is very successful.Wieden + Kennedy London instaured a few simple rules to improve work / life balance and let their employees focus on work rather than a lot of meeting time:- No emails before 8am and after 7pm- No meetings before 10am and after 4pm- No exceptions for management- Friday work finishes at 4:30pm- Any late nights or weekend time spent working is gained back later on.It's working very well so far.

What's going on in gaming?

An event she also organised in the past,

, that gathered hundreds of people sharing, eating, playing and having fun on London's Southwark Bridge turned into a giant hay fight!

What else is interesting this week?

All the talks were really brilliant at the conference, I recommend checking out the list of speakers if you'd like to find out more. The last one I really enjoyed and will share here was from Clara Gaggero Westaway, a designer at Special Projects. She talked about designing "Out of the Box" a new kind of mobile phone packaging and instruction for an aging population, it was fantastic and inspiring - so much that design won several awards and was exhibited at the MoMa in New York. That's about it for this Sundae! Next edition will be brought to you from The Pines Resort on Bass Lake, where I'll be staying a few days, near Yosemite National Park!If you enjoyed the newsletter, please send it to a friend!Till next week.Willem
