Sundae Summer: Podcast Movement  [Ice Cream Sundae]

Hi , I’ve been having so much fun in Chicago I completely forgot to write and send the newsletter yesterday! I’m on my way back to London, stopping over in Dublin for a couple of hours right now so I have a little bit of time to send this out before my connecting flight. The Podcast Movement Conference I attended last week was brilliant. I learned loads from experienced podcast and radio professionals, met great people and over all a lot of fantastic food for thought to improve my podcast. Kevin Smith was one of the keynote speakers; he gave a passionate speech for over an hour and got a standing ovation by the end. He talked about the importance of self-expression and how podcasting is an amazing avenue for it with nobody to say no to whatever it is you want to do. He shared several inspiring stories of how his podcasting projects helped him and friends through difficult time, such as the very entertaining Jay & Silent Bob Get Old podcast he does with Jason Mewes as a way to keep Jason off drugs. I learned about pretty advanced narrative sound design with Kaitlin Prest and Brendan Baker (of Love+Radio). Kaitlin is the co-creator and producer of one of my favourite podcasts these days: The Heart. She walked us through the multi-layered many audio tracks used to create this award-winning episode titled “Movies in your Headâ€. I got to geek out and get photos taken with Arnie Niekamp of Hello from The Magic Tavern podcast, and Alex Blumberg who gave the closing keynote. Alex is a bit of a celebrity in the world of podcasts; he hosted the first season of StartUp and created Gimlet Media, the creators of several hit podcasts like Reply All and The Mystery Show. I have a lot to digest from everything I learned. The first step is going to go over many of my podcast’s first season episode and edit a 3 to 5 minute sample clip to give a sense of the show to new listeners and that I’ll be able to send to prospective guests in the future. That’s about it for this week’s quick update. Have a great week! CheersWillem
